You can contact me at walterwego at macosx dot com.Gutenprint (formerly Gimp-Print) is a collection of free software printer drivers for use with UNIX spooling systems, such as CUPS, lpr and LPRng. If we need to explore anything else, we should probably do it off forum. I think we are straying a bit from the purpose of of this forum which is supposed to be for Gutenprint drivers. ![]() ![]() Post back with your results to "finish" the archive for this thread. Hopefully the pxlmono route will give you a better output. It also has more definitive output resolutions. The pxlmono does support color or grayscale printing. The pxlmono PPD however, uses a different device driver compiled into Ghostscript. That PPD uses Ghostscript and the Foomatic-RIP which are already on your computer. Look for "HP Color LaserJet 5000 Foomatic/pxlmono" when choosing the PPD. You can then create a new printer queue using that PPD. Place the downloaded PPD in the /Library/Printers/PPDs/Contents/Resources/en.lproj/ directory. Download the PPD for the HP Color LaserJet 5000. This may be a limitation of the hpijs drivers much like the Gutenprint drivers won't print in color. It does look like the PPD may be limiting the resolution to 150dpi no matter what options are selected. Then again, the Gutenprint drivers won't print in color on the Dell printer. It has been my experience that the hpijs drivers do not produce as good quality as the Gutenprint drivers. >Either the "HP Color LaserJet 2500 Foomatic/hpijs" or "HP Color LaserJet 5000 Foomatic/hpijs" print in color. Go to to see a screen shot of the "HP Color LaserJet 5500 - CUPS+Gutenprint v5.0.0-rc3" dialog.Īnd go to to see the toner levels when using the the CLJ 5000 driver. Note: I did my test prints with the "How to Print with Gutenprint.pdf" document, which has colours. yet, the "Printer Features" only display Grayscale. Another thing that's weird is that when I'm in the print dialog box showing me the printer name and the presets, I can select "Supply Levels" (with the CLJ5000 driver) and it actually shows me the correct toner levels for CMYK. Usually OS X list USB device with their correct name if it supports it without installing drivers for it. I find it frustrating that when the printer is plugged in, OS X shows it in the USB device list as "Dell Laser Printer 3000cn". I also installed the usbtb driver and created a printer with it alongside the "HP Color LaserJet 5500 - CUPS+Gutenprint v5.0.0-rc3" driver. only options in printer feature for colour model is grayscale or inverted grayscale. I also created a new printer via USB with the "Generic PCL 6/PCL XL Printer - CUPS+Gutenprint v5.0.0-rc3" driver. No differences, same behavior as with the 5500 driver. I created a new printer via both ports (1 each), but this time using the "HP Color LaserJet 5000 - CUPS+Gutenprint v5.0.0-rc3" driver. I created a new printer with the exact same driver, but this time via a USB connection. Why is the driver called "HP Color LaserJet 5500 - CUPS+Gutenprint v5.0.0-rc3" if there's no colour option? Where it says "Color Mode:", the only options are "Grayscale" and "Inverted Grayscale". I checked "Printer Features" from the print dialog. I checked the printer's configuration from the control panel and confirmed that the PCL colour setting is set to colour. I created a new printer via LDP (direct IP) with driver "HP Color LaserJet 5500 - CUPS+Gutenprint v5.0.0-rc3". I downloaded and installed gutenprint-5.0.0-rc3. I didn't have the Gutenprint drivers installed, I didn't know about them, only had the gimp-print drivers from 2004!! duh. I will continue my searches, thanks for your response. but alas, that driver is PS only because the print out comes out as garbage text with the header at the top. I've tried many different drivers, including the HP Colour Laserjet 5500, which from what I read should work. The generic PCL drivers on the Mac do print in B&W, but none work in colour. Dell's 3100cn is PCL+PS, but the 3000cn is strictly PCL. Redarding what you wrote about the 3000cn at the beginning, that model is NOT Postscript. I figured it out, but my tests were unsuccessful, mostly due to the computer with the raw queue not allowing incoming connections. I had to read a fair amount to figure out how to do all of that. The guy suggested to create a raw print queue to the device, and then create a different queue with a generic PCL driver pointing to the raw print queue. One suggested method was in regards to colour printing on that model from linux. I spent all afternoon yesterday trying different ways. Thanks for all the info Matt, I'll try your suggestions. ![]()
